Queen's Speech about the Politics of Fear, Not Hope

9.00.00am GMT Wed 24th Nov 2004

Prospective Liberal Democrat MP for the Forest of Dean, Chris Coleman, has commented on yesterdays Queen's Speech.

He said: "This is yet another lost opportunity for the New Labour Government.

"They could have proposed legislation to fund extra police numbers, to introduce free personal care for the elderly, to scrap tuition fees for students and to Axe Council Tax.

"But instead of the politics of hope, New Labour offers the politics of fear.

"Their plans for identity cards are hugely expensive, will be ineffective in fighting terrorism, and threaten civil liberties.

"Mr Blair's Government are offering nothing on the big issues facing British families, unlike Liberal Democrat plans to abolish tuition fees, axe care charges on the elderly, raise pensions, replace the unfair Council Tax, and recruit 10,000 more police."
